We all know the importance of exercise for keeping us physically healthy. But did you know that exercise can also help keep you mentally healthy? Research shows that people who exercise regularly have better mental health and emotional well-being and lower rates of mental illness.

Taking up exercise seems to reduce the risk of developing mental illness, and it also seems to help treat some mental health conditions, like depression and anxiety. For example, for mild-moderate depression, research suggests physical activity can be as effective as antidepressants or psychological treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy.

Jama Psychiatry, a monthly peer-reviewed medical journal published by the American Medical Association, published a study regarding the effects of small exercises on mental health this month.

For this extensive research, they collected data from 15 different studies and involved more than 200K people. The research found that people who complied with the recommended weekly exercise guideline were significantly less likely to have depression. The research also disclosed that the positive effects were still visible in those who exercised half as much.

25% Depression Protection

The research found that participants who properly followed the recommended exercise guideline could get better protection against depression and anxiety. For example, those participants who have been doing brisk walking, cycling, or swimming for two and a half hours per week were 25 percent less likely to have depression. In comparison, those who exercised for half of that time were 18 percent less likely to be found with the condition.

Moreover, the research suggested that moderate exercise could prevent 11 percent of future cases of depression.

Physical Activities Should Be Encouraged

This systematic review and meta-analysis of associations between physical activity and depression suggest significant mental health benefits from being physically active, even at levels below the public health recommendations. The research advised that health practitioners should therefore encourage any increase in physical activity to improve mental health.
