What is EMS?

EMS is getting more and more popular among the world’s most exclusive gyms.

Some trainers claim this is the new “thing”, and some are even promoting this technique as the new magical routine that’s going to give you the body of your dreams… In only 20 minutes!

So, what is this? Is this really the new magical formula in fitness?

Electro-muscle stimulation

Electro-muscle stimulation, aka “e-stim” is the use of electrical stimulation on the nerves that produce muscle contraction. This is most commonly used in physical therapy; the nerve stimulation is used to help the muscle relax and loosen, overall, helping and strengthening weak  muscles.

This kind of therapy is common for people with spinal cord injuries, for example.

Now, this technique has evolved to the point where people can use this electrical stimulation combined with an exercise routine. EMS delivers electrical stimulation while you’re working out, with the objective of stimulating your muscles deeper.

Now… this is not that new. For people who have ever seen infomercials, you may remember these magical devices that you connect all over your body, and then try to sell you the idea that you can get a six pack while sitting on your couch watching tv.

EMS is nothing like that.

How EMS training works

When you are training, your brain is constantly sending electrical signals to your muscles, so they move, contract, relax, and overall function.

While doing a certain exercise, your brain is making a certain amount of muscle fibers contract. The more weight and load, the more muscle fibers contract.

The idea behind EMS is to make your body contract the biggest amount of muscle fibers possible, while you’re working out.

Basically, your body is moving more muscles than it normally would, thanks to the help of the electric pulses.

Simultaneously, the person will be receiving constant electric pulses every few seconds. The process is not painful, but most people describe it as “weird” “interesting” or “having hundreds of cellphones vibrating in your skin”.

As you may imagine, this should be performed by and under the supervision of professionals. The trainers control the voltage that the person is receiving, maintaining it into safe measurements.

By the end of the session, the person is covered in sweat. What usually would feel like a normal warming up session, feels much more tiring. During the next day, it’s totally normal to feel the soreness from intense training.

Commonly, the places offering these services recommend only two sessions per week, with four days of rest between sessions.

The overall results are stronger muscles, more fat-burning, more calorie-burning, and the quickest results that the fitness industry can offer you. So… forty minutes in total of weekly exercise, and an interesting science behind this…

Now, every gym offers different kinds of EMS training services.

Is it real that you will get the body of your dreams by receiving EMS training ?

There are some important points people should know about EMS training. The first one being that there’s still not enough research to support all of the claims most gyms make. Research is still being done on this subject. There is still a lot to study and uncover.

On one hand, yes, EMS can help muscle strengthening, it can give you results in a quicker amount of time, but, one the other hand, most service providers could be entering the false advertisement territory.

To this day, we are not 100% sure that EMS activates 90% of your muscles simultaneously, for example. We aren’t 100% sure either about how many calories you burn during an EMS session.

Finally, we do not know the long-term effects of EMS training. Yes, you might get bigger muscles, but doctors are still wondering how the body is going to evolve after receiving that extra “help”.

It’s important that, if you want to try EMS training, you do so with real expectatives. There’s no magic trick here, and there’s no guarantee that 40 minutes per week are the only thing that you need to achieve the body of your dreams.

A clean diet is still necessary, and that’s rarely mentioned in the advertising of EMS training.

In the end, remember that long-term results require time and discipline.
