The Amsterdam-based wellness and fitness community, Sanctum is bringing its unique “cathartic workout experience” to Abu Dhabi for a four-day desert retreat at the Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara. The retreat will run from March 30th to April 3rd and offers physical and mental fitness activities. The retreat is led by co-founder Luuk Melisse and promises four days of meditation, relaxation, fitness, and “awakening”.
Origins of Sanctum
Sanctum was born during the COVID-19 pandemic when people suffered from heightened mental and emotional challenges. The concept came about as a response to increasing depression and anxiety levels caused by the pandemic. Olzweski initially hosted online classes on Instagram to help people improve their mental state.
The Sanctum Method
Sanctum is a high-intensity mindful movement founded by Luuk Melisse, a professional dancer, and Gabriel Olszewski, a former marketing executive. It aims to empower the body and expand the mind by combining primal, dance-inspired moves with various forms of conditioning such as kundalini yoga, martial arts, animal flow routines, and breathwork with elements of high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
Music And Spoken Poetry
Each session is accompanied by music and spoken poetry, with participants wearing bespoke wireless headphones similar to a silent disco setup. The idea behind the headphones is for participants to “release and let go” and push their physical, mental, and spiritual boundaries to achieve physical and mindful euphoria. The blueprinted Sanctum sequence encourages expression without judgment.
Retreat Activities
Aside from the daily Sanctum sessions with Melisse, the retreat will offer a variety of activities such as mindful hikes, desert walks, stargazing, and a massage combined with sound healing. Participants will also enjoy healthy gourmet meals, access to a sound therapy concert, and an energy center healing workshop.
Price Packages
The retreat package costs Dh11,500 per person or Dh18,700 for two people. It includes a three-night stay at the Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara.
Expansion To The UAE
The Abu Dhabi retreat marks Sanctum’s permanent expansion plans to the UAE. However, the company does not plan to own any physical locations. Instead, it will host regular weekly classes in a more nomadic manner. Classes will be held on rooftops, in art galleries, and in outdoor spaces.
